Former federal lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, has criticised a fresh petition calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to reopen an investigation into alleged financial crimes involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The petition was filed by former member of the House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, who urged the anti-graft agency to revisit allegations dating back to Atiku’s tenure as Vice President between 2005 and 2006.
Agbonayinma gave the EFCC 14 days to act on the petition, warning that he would instruct his lawyers to commence legal action against the commission if it failed to respond.
The petition, signed on Agbonayinma’s behalf by his counsel, Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, SAN, of Sagitarian Law Firm, alleged that the EFCC had previously investigated and produced a report on allegations of grand corruption involving Atiku.
Reacting in a video shared on his official X account, Melaye described the renewed petition as an attempt to revive an issue he claimed had been dismissed more than a decade ago.
Melaye also questioned Agbonayinma’s credibility, referring to his movement between political parties in recent years.
He said the petition was “shameful” and accused its author of being “myopic and disorganised.”
The renewed call for an investigation comes as Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election, remains active in Nigeria’s opposition political landscape.
