ASUU Raises Alarm Over Unpaid Allowances, Warns Delay Could Trigger Fresh Crisis in Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), North West University Kano chapter, has called on the Federal Government and the Kano State Government to urgently settle outstanding allowances captured in the 2025 ASUU–FGN agreement, warning that continued delays could threaten stability within the nation’s university system.

The union, in a statement issued on Monday following its congress held last week, expressed growing frustration over what it described as the slow pace of implementation of agreed welfare packages for university workers.

ASUU also decried the failure to implement the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and the Secretariat Assistance Allowance (SAA), both of which were scheduled to take effect in January 2026.

Chairperson of the union in the university, Mansur Said, said despite several correspondences with the university management and the Kano State Government, there had been no meaningful progress toward addressing the issues.

According to him, the welfare of academic staff remains critical to maintaining stability, productivity and quality service delivery within the higher education sector.

He noted that delays in implementing approved entitlements have subjected university workers to unnecessary hardship while also leading to the accumulation of avoidable arrears.

Said urged all relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts toward ensuring the immediate release and implementation of the outstanding allowances, stressing that honoring agreements reached with university workers is essential for sustaining industrial harmony and promoting excellence in higher education.

While reaffirming the union’s commitment to dialogue and peaceful engagement, he cautioned that ASUU’s patience was gradually wearing thin.

“We expect that the necessary action will be taken without further delay in the interest of staff, students and the university community,” the statement read.

The union warned that failure to address the outstanding issues promptly could undermine confidence in ongoing negotiations and potentially disrupt academic activities across the university system.
