Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has commiserated with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by violence in Plateau State.
Speaking to victims at an IDP camp in the state on Tuesday, Obi expressed concern over the continued displacement of communities, saying the situation should be treated as a national crisis.
“As long as you are in an IDP camp, Nigerians are still in IDP camps. You are not supposed to be here,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor called on the Federal Government to pay greater attention to the security situation in Plateau State and take decisive steps to end the killings and attacks that have forced residents from their homes.
He acknowledged the importance of prayers but stressed that the responsibility to protect citizens ultimately rests with the government.
“Yes, we need prayers, but these problems can be solved by the government. The people carrying out these atrocities are not from the moon. The government should deal with them,” he said.
Obi also urged other presidential candidates to visit IDP camps across the country and engage directly with displaced Nigerians affected by insecurity.
He said such visits would help draw greater attention to the plight of displaced communities and the urgent need to restore peace and enable them to return home.
