The African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to nominate former President Goodluck Jonathan for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, describing him as a strong candidate with the experience and credibility required for the role.
In a statement issued on Thursday, APRC Convener, Prof. Edward Agbai, said Jonathan’s record in governance, diplomacy and democratic leadership makes him well-suited to lead the global body at a time of growing international challenges.
According to Agbai, the United Nations requires a leader with proven executive experience, democratic credentials and the ability to navigate complex global issues.
The consortium highlighted Jonathan’s tenure as Nigeria’s Vice President from 2007 to 2010 and President from 2010 to 2015, noting that his leadership demonstrated responsible governance and national stability.
APRC also commended Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat in the 2015 presidential election, describing it as a landmark moment for democracy in Nigeria and Africa. The group said the peaceful transfer of power strengthened democratic institutions and reflected Jonathan’s commitment to constitutional governance.
The consortium further noted that since leaving office, Jonathan has remained active in promoting democracy, peacebuilding and conflict resolution across Africa. It cited his election observation and mediation missions under regional and continental organisations, including the African Union, ECOWAS, COMESA, IGAD and the West African Elders Forum.
According to the group, Jonathan’s emphasis on dialogue, consultation and consensus-building has earned him international recognition, qualities it said are essential for a United Nations Secretary-General tasked with mediating conflicts and fostering global cooperation.
APRC also argued that Jonathan’s experience governing one of Africa’s most diverse nations has given him valuable insight into global development, security and environmental challenges.
The group added that the emergence of an African Secretary-General would strengthen the continent’s voice in global governance and international decision-making.
It therefore urged the Federal Government to begin diplomatic consultations with African countries and other international partners to build support for Jonathan’s candidacy.
While acknowledging that the position requires broad international backing, APRC maintained that every successful campaign begins with presenting a credible candidate.
The consortium called on President Tinubu to back Jonathan’s nomination, saying such a move would enhance Nigeria’s diplomatic standing and advance Africa’s quest for greater representation within global institutions.
