Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to launch a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the killing of at least 15 people in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, warning that the continued attacks pose a grave threat to the right to life.
In a statement posted on its verified Facebook page on Tuesday, the human rights organisation said at least 14 residents were killed on July 28, 2026, when armed attackers invaded Efeyi-Ugboju in Ugboju District. The incident came a day after another resident was reportedly killed in nearby Ipom-Ugboju, bringing the death toll from the two attacks to at least 15.
Amnesty International described the latest killings as part of an unrelenting wave of violence affecting communities in southern Benue, saying residents continue to live under constant fear of attacks.
“These killings in the southern part of Benue State clearly show an unrelenting campaign of violence that continues to make life a hell for villagers,” the organisation said.
The group expressed concern over what it described as the continued failure to adequately protect communities in Otukpo and other parts of Benue State, alleging that armed groups have been able to operate with impunity.
According to Amnesty International, the government’s inability to prevent recurring attacks or ensure accountability has fueled a cycle of violence, resulting in deaths, displacement and the destruction of livelihoods.
The organisation urged the authorities to conduct an independent, transparent and impartial investigation aimed at identifying, arresting and prosecuting those responsible for the killings in line with the rule of law.
“The government is obligated to protect lives and property. Those responsible for these attacks must be identified, arrested and held accountable through a credible judicial process,” the statement added.
