The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Ajibola Basiru, has declared that any politician serious about winning elections in Nigeria must align with the ruling party, insisting that the APC remains the country’s most formidable political force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Basiru stated that apart from the Peoples Democratic Party, no other political platform has demonstrated the electoral strength and national spread required to successfully challenge the APC.
According to him, the various coalition movements positioning themselves against the ruling party ahead of 2027 have yet to establish credibility as viable electoral forces.
“Aside from the PDP, APC remains the strongest political machinery for winning elections in Nigeria today,” Basiru said.
“Many of the groups calling themselves coalitions are yet to prove themselves as credible electoral forces, and for now, they appear more like political distractions than serious alternatives.”
The APC rose to power in 2015 following a historic political merger that brought together major opposition blocs in 2013, including the Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressive Change, and the All Nigeria Peoples Party.
The coalition adopted former President Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate, who subsequently defeated then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in a landmark election widely regarded as a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The victory marked the first time an opposition party successfully unseated a sitting government through the ballot box in Nigeria, with the APC campaigning on its widely popular “change” mantra.
