Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has been declared the winner of the August 15 governorship election, securing a second term in office after defeating his closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
The State Returning Officer for the election and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, declared Adeleke the winner at about 7:24 a.m. on Sunday.
Adeleke, who contested under the platform of the Accord, polled 511,067 votes to emerge victorious, while Oyebamiji secured 444,815 votes.
The governor won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won in 11.
Adeleke recorded victories in Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, Egbedore, Ife North, Ife East, Ife Central, Oriade, Ifelodun, Orolu, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Odo Otin, Boluwaduro, Ilesa West, Ifedayo and Osogbo.
Oyebamiji, on the other hand, won in Irewole, Isokan, Olorunda, Atakumosa East, Atakumosa West, Ilesa East, Boripe, Irepodun and Obokun, among other areas.
The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Najeem Salaam, finished third in the election.
Declaring the final results, Ogunwole said 1,010,684 voters were accredited, while 1,005,800 votes were cast. A total of 985,079 votes were declared valid, with 20,721 votes rejected.
The Returning Officer subsequently declared Adeleke duly elected after the agents of the participating political parties signed the election results.
“Ademola Nurudeen-Jackson Adeleke, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner of the August 15 governorship election and returned elected,” Ogunwole announced.
Adeleke’s victory means he will remain in office for another four-year term as governor of Osun State.
