“A Nation Losing Its Humanity” — Peter Obi Condemns Brutal Killings of Teacher, Elderly Woman

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the gruesome murder of a teacher and the alleged rape and killing of an elderly woman, describing the incidents as horrifying signs of deepening moral decay in society.

In a statement shared on his X platform, Obi said the tragic incidents were so disturbing that words could barely capture the level of shock and pain they evoke.

According to him, the brutal killing of a teacher alongside the appalling assault and murder of an elderly woman reflects a disturbing collapse in societal values and collective conscience.

“These occurrences are not isolated but indicative of a more profound moral and social decline,” Obi stated.

Questioning the state of the nation, the former governor lamented how society had descended to a point where teachers are hunted and killed, while elderly citizens — whom he described as custodians of wisdom and memory — are subjected to degrading violence.

“This transcends a mere security issue; it represents a failure of our collective humanity,” he said.

Obi further warned against growing public indifference to violence and tragedy, noting that many people now consume heartbreaking news briefly before moving on, thereby normalising what should never be accepted.

He extended his condolences to the affected families but stressed that sympathy alone would not solve the problem.

“We must insist on accountability and immediate systemic reform. If such atrocities no longer compel us to act, we risk forfeiting our shared humanity,” he added.
