Suspected political thugs have attacked supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) during a campaign rally in Delta State, leaving some participants injured and others fleeing for safety.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday while party supporters were gathered at the rally venue.
The attackers allegedly disrupted the gathering, assaulted some supporters and damaged a vehicle parked near the venue.
Some participants reportedly sustained injuries, while others lost their mobile phones and personal belongings in the ensuing chaos as they attempted to escape.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, showed people running in different directions as confusion broke out at the venue.
In the footage, a voice believed to be that of one of the participants condemned the attack, insisting that the supporters had gathered peacefully to campaign and were not looking for confrontation.
“We came here to campaign in peace. We did not come to fight anybody. What happened today is not good for democracy,” the speaker said.
The circumstances surrounding the attack and the identities of those responsible were not immediately established.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about political violence and the safety of supporters during political activities, particularly as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
