Nigerian comedian and social commentator, DeeOne, has cautioned Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, against making statements that could heighten tensions between the police and members of the public.
DeeOne made the remarks on Thursday while reacting to reports that Disu had cautioned Nigerians against recording police officers while they are carrying out their duties.
The IGP had urged citizens to exercise restraint when recording officers on official duty, arguing that the practice could demoralise members of the Force.
Reacting to the development in a viral Instagram video, DeeOne warned that such comments could encourage some undisciplined police officers to intimidate citizens and potentially trigger public unrest.
He recalled that videos showing alleged police brutality played a significant role in fuelling the 2020 #EndSARS protests, stressing that citizens should be allowed to document encounters with police officers in public places for accountability and safety.
DeeOne also called for the increased use of body cameras by police officers, arguing that the technology could help protect both citizens and responsible members of the Force.
He further alleged that he recently encountered an officer at a police station who appeared intoxicated, raising concerns about the potential danger of officers carrying firearms while under the influence of alcohol.
The comedian urged Disu to prioritise building trust, harmony and cooperation between the police and citizens rather than making statements that could further widen the gap between both sides.
DeeOne also commended the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for reportedly calling the IGP to order, while appealing to the police leadership to ensure that officers respect citizens’ rights and conduct themselves professionally.
