Former Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Salihu Lukman, has revealed that efforts are underway to unite major opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Lukman said a framework was being developed to enable opposition parties to work together and ultimately produce a single presidential candidate capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking in an interview with Arise News, the former APC chieftain urged opposition parties to recognize that their primary political contest should be with the ruling party rather than among themselves.
According to him, a proposal has already been presented for consideration by opposition leaders, with the aim of creating a structure that would allow them to operate as a cohesive political force.
He said the initiative would give the opposition a better chance of presenting a united front to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The ultimate objective is that we want to have one candidate, but it cannot be by declaration. They have to sit down and agree on the criteria they are going to apply in determining that candidate. They will agree among themselves,” Lukman said.
The proposed alliance comes amid growing efforts by opposition figures and parties to form a broader coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
