The Kebbi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has thrown its weight behind the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over his proposal to reintroduce fuel subsidy if elected president.
The party said a transparent and accountable subsidy system could help ease the economic burden on Nigerians by reducing transportation costs and the prices of essential commodities.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Deputy Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Musa, the Kebbi ADC said Nigerians were currently grappling with rising costs of goods, services and transportation.
The party argued that a properly managed subsidy regime, free from corruption and abuse, could provide relief for low-income households by helping to bring down transport fares and the cost of basic commodities.
The Kebbi ADC maintained that any subsidy policy must be implemented transparently and subject to strict accountability to prevent the corruption and inefficiencies associated with previous subsidy regimes.
