The Labour Party (LP) has cautioned opposition politicians against forming new political alliances ahead of the 2027 general election, warning that such moves could weaken the opposition and improve the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s chances of retaining power.
Instead, the party urged opposition groups and political movements to unite under its existing platform, arguing that it already possesses the nationwide structure and institutional strength needed to challenge the APC.
The position was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, on behalf of the Labour Party and the G-100 Coalition Group.
According to the statement, while the party welcomes collaboration among opposition forces, creating new political platforms would only fragment the opposition and diminish its electoral prospects.
“Rather than creating new platforms or fragmented alliances, the national interest would be better served by strengthening the one opposition party that already possesses a tested nationwide network and institutional foundation,” the statement read.
The Labour Party attributed its nationwide reach to its longstanding relationship with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), saying the affiliation provides it with an extensive grassroots network across the country.
Asogwa noted that the party’s membership cuts across virtually every polling unit, ward and local government area through serving and retired civil servants, giving it what he described as an unmatched national presence.
He further argued that no other political party, including the APC, enjoys a comparable grassroots structure.
“The Labour Party is the strongest opposition platform capable of winning the 2027 presidential election. We already have a strong organisational structure, an active membership base and a credible presidential candidate with the capacity to provide the leadership Nigerians are looking for,” the statement added.
The party maintained that the opposition’s best path to victory in 2027 lies in rallying behind a single, established platform rather than creating new coalitions.
