The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic building collapses in Anambra and Ogun states that claimed two lives and left several others affected.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, Obi described the incidents—one involving structures accommodating students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Amaokpala, Anambra State, and another in Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State—as heartbreaking and avoidable.
The former Anambra State governor said the tragedies underscore the urgent need for authorities to place greater priority on the safety and welfare of Nigerians.
Obi commended the Anambra and Ogun state governments, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, emergency responders, security agencies, and all those involved in the rescue operations for their swift and coordinated response.
According to him, their prompt intervention helped avert an even greater disaster.
He stressed that the incidents should serve as a wake-up call for stricter enforcement of building regulations across the country.
“Across our country, we must strengthen the enforcement of building regulations, ensure strict compliance with approved standards, and insist on regular structural integrity assessments to avoid preventable tragedies,” Obi said.
He further emphasized that the safety of citizens, particularly students and young people, must remain at the heart of national development efforts, urging continued investment in safe educational infrastructure and secure living environments.
Obi extended his condolences to the families of the deceased, wished a speedy recovery to those injured, and expressed solidarity with students affected by the Amaokpala collapse.
“I will continue to cherish and support our students, as they remain central to building the New Nigeria we aspire to. By investing in their education, safety, and well-being, we make that New Nigeria possible,” he added.
