The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that a serving military officer, Colonel Abdussalam A. Ude, was killed by gunmen in Abuja, clarifying that the incident occurred in neighboring Nasarawa State.
Earlier reports had alleged that the officer was attacked and killed by suspected kidnappers in the Kurudu District of the FCT, while his wife reportedly sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
However, in a statement issued Tuesday night, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, described the reports as false and misleading.
She said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, immediately ordered a comprehensive investigation after the reports surfaced.
According to the police, preliminary findings confirmed that the incident took place in Badna, New Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, and not within the jurisdiction of the FCT Police Command.
“The incident occurred in Badna, New Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, and not within the jurisdiction of the FCT Police Command as falsely portrayed in the circulating publications,” the statement read.
The Command expressed concern over what it described as the deliberate misrepresentation of the incident by some blogs and media outlets in a bid to attract attention, warning that such inaccurate reporting fuels unnecessary panic and public anxiety among residents of the nation’s capital.
To strengthen security, the Commissioner of Police has directed the immediate deployment of operational and intelligence personnel to border communities linking the FCT with Nasarawa State. The move, according to the Command, is aimed at preventing criminal elements from infiltrating the Federal Capital Territory or carrying out any unlawful activities within Abuja.
