The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that every valid vote cast in the 2027 general elections will count, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair and credible polls.
Amupitan gave the assurance on Friday during a courtesy visit to former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), at his residence in Minna, Niger State.
Leading a delegation of National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors and technical aides, the INEC chairman described Abdulsalami as “the father of democracy in Nigeria,” noting that his successful transition to civilian rule in 1999 laid the foundation for the country’s democratic journey.
He also praised the former Head of State’s leadership of the National Peace Committee, saying its Peace Accord initiative has continued to promote peaceful elections by encouraging political actors to embrace non-violence and democratic values.
Describing the visit as “a pilgrimage of appreciation,” Amupitan commended Abdulsalami for his enduring contributions to democratic stability, peaceful coexistence and credible elections. He also congratulated him on his recent 84th birthday.
Reaffirming the commission’s resolve despite the challenges ahead, Amupitan said INEC would remain steadfast in protecting the sanctity of the ballot.
“The Commission’s determination under my leadership is to ensure that ordinary Nigerians can go out and vote with confidence that their votes will be counted and reflected in the final outcome of elections. That is the core assurance INEC owes the electorate,” he said.
The INEC chairman also officially announced the timetable for the 2027 general elections. According to him, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
Responding, Abdulsalami urged Nigerians to support INEC in its efforts to deliver credible elections, stressing the importance of public cooperation in strengthening the nation’s democracy.
