The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged not to persecute political opponents if elected Nigeria’s president in 2027, promising instead to foster a strong and constructive opposition.
Speaking in an interview with DW, the former Anambra State governor said his administration would be guided by the rule of law and democratic principles, insisting that institutions must function independently and fairly.
Obi stated that he would not use the powers of the presidency to target political rivals, stressing that a healthy democracy requires a vibrant opposition capable of holding the government accountable.
“The system must work the way it should function. I would never persecute anybody politically, and I would never do anything wrong while in office,” he said.
He added, “I would not go after opponents. I would make sure we have strong opposition parties that can stand and say no. In times of national challenges, I would invite them to the table.”
Obi also said that if he were president amid the current security challenges in northern Nigeria, he would convene a meeting involving opposition parties and key stakeholders from the region to develop lasting solutions.
“If I was president with what is happening in the North, I would invite all opposition parties and sit with stakeholders in the North to discuss and come up with solutions,” he said.
