The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nigerian medical graduate, Miss Nnani Adaobi Marian, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
Adaobi, 23, a graduate of Kharkiv National Medical University, reportedly suffered severe burns covering about 90 per cent of her body after a Russian strike hit the city of Kharkiv on June 29. She was later evacuated to a hospital in Germany, where she died while receiving treatment.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described her death as a heartbreaking loss. The statement, signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, conveyed the government’s condolences to her family and loved ones.
“The Federal Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues, and the Nigerian community affected by this tragic loss,” the statement read.
The ministry disclosed that Nigerian missions in Ukraine and Germany are working with relevant authorities to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide the necessary consular support to Adaobi’s family.
The government also reiterated its concern over the continued loss of civilian lives resulting from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, renewing its call for an immediate ceasefire.
“Nigeria urges all parties to embrace dialogue, diplomacy, and the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter,” the statement added.
