Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has criticized the decision by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to adopt former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Reacting to the development in a post shared on his verified X account on Monday, Sani described the move as coming too late, arguing that those now rallying behind Jonathan failed to support him when the party was in a stronger political position.

According to the former lawmaker, the PDP had a better opportunity to present Jonathan as its presidential candidate during the 2023 election cycle when the party was still relatively united and politically viable.

“If they actually wanted Jonathan, they should have fielded him in 2023 when the party was relatively alive and in good shape. They just now want him to help them carry the coffin,” Sani wrote.

He suggested that the latest push for Jonathan’s candidacy is not necessarily driven by a genuine belief in his chances of returning to power but rather by an effort to leverage his political influence and national appeal to revive a struggling party.

The remarks come amid growing discussions within sections of the opposition over potential strategies and alliances ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

While Jonathan has yet to publicly respond to the adoption or indicate any interest in contesting, the development has continued to generate reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape.
