Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with his major rival in the party’s presidential primary, former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
The meeting comes days after Atiku emerged winner of the keenly contested ADC presidential primary, defeating Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to secure the party’s presidential ticket.
Amaechi had earlier rejected the outcome of the primary even before the official announcement of the results, alleging that the process was marred by irregularities.
In his acceptance speech after clinching the ticket, however, Atiku appealed to Amaechi and other aggrieved members of the party to put aside their grievances and unite in the interest of the party ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Although details of Thursday’s meeting were still sketchy as of press time, neither Atiku nor Amaechi addressed journalists on the outcome of the discussions.
Sources within the ADC, however, disclosed that the meeting may be part of ongoing reconciliation efforts by Atiku aimed at mending internal divisions, calming tensions within the party, and securing Amaechi’s support ahead of the 2027 polls.
The development is seen by political observers as a crucial step toward strengthening the ADC’s internal cohesion as the party positions itself as a major force in the forthcoming general election.
