Kano Rift Deepens as Gov Yusuf Fires Back at Kwankwaso Over ‘Betrayal’ Claims

The political crisis between Abba Kabir Yusuf and his former political mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, escalated on Tuesday after the Kano State governor issued a stern warning to the former presidential candidate over recent remarks against him.

Addressing supporters in Kano, Governor Yusuf cautioned Kwankwaso to moderate his comments, warning that he could reveal sensitive details if further provoked.

The governor was reacting to Kwankwaso’s recent interview in which the former leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party accused him of betrayal and vowed to politically defeat him ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kano State.

“How can a 69-year-old man call someone who is 63 a boy? I tolerated that because of obedience,” Yusuf said while speaking to a crowd of supporters.

“If he doesn’t keep quiet and control his words, I will start saying things he wouldn’t like. I believe peace and stability in Kano State are paramount, but if we’re pushed too far, we will speak out,” he added.

The development marks a fresh twist in the widening political feud between both leaders, whose relationship was once seen as one of the strongest political alliances in northern Nigeria.

Governor Yusuf was elected on the platform of the NNPP during the 2023 general elections but later defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, a move that deepened divisions within the Kwankwasiyya political movement.
