The United States Department of State has activated a comprehensive emergency response plan following the outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
The development was announced in a statement published on the official account of the U.S. Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs.
According to the statement, the emergency response plan was activated within 48 hours of the outbreak, with an initial 13 million dollars in foreign assistance mobilised to support urgent containment and humanitarian efforts.
The U.S. government also disclosed that it is leveraging existing humanitarian support structures coordinated through the United Nations system to ensure the rapid deployment of additional assistance to the affected countries.
The intervention, according to the statement, is aimed at strengthening response coordination, improving emergency health support, and enhancing humanitarian assistance in both countries as efforts intensify to contain the spread of the disease.
“American leadership remains indispensable in confronting global health threats,” the statement added.
