Ohanaeze Links Decline in South-East Attacks to Post-Buhari Era, Commends Tinubu on Security Gains

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has claimed that the South-East has experienced a significant drop in suspected Fulani herdsmen attacks since the exit from office and subsequent death of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2025.

In a statement released on Sunday by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Chief Thompson Ohia, the group described the development as “remarkable” and indicative of deeper underlying factors behind the past insecurity in the region.

Ohanaeze alleged that the sharp decline in violent incidents following Buhari’s demise reinforces long-standing suspicions among Igbo people that armed groups operating under the guise of herdsmen were supported by the state during his administration. The organisation further argued that these groups were allegedly used to destabilise the South-East and parts of Southern Nigeria.

According to the statement, the region endured over six years of sustained attacks marked by destruction of farmlands, occupation of forests, and displacement of communities. The group claimed that more than 2,960 lives were lost during the period, with many others injured.

While acknowledging the efforts of both the Federal Government and South-East governors in addressing security challenges, Ohanaeze maintained that the most decisive turning point came after Buhari’s passing, citing what it described as a “dramatic reduction” in attacks.

The organisation also criticised policies under Buhari’s administration, referencing what it termed a “Fulanization agenda,” which it said contributed to distrust between the Igbo people and the then APC-led government.

In contrast, Ohanaeze praised the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, attributing improved security and infrastructure development in the South-East to his leadership.

The group noted that residents of the region now experience greater peace and stability, with enhanced road networks and ongoing development projects contributing to renewed confidence.

Ohanaeze concluded by extending birthday wishes to President Tinubu on his 74th anniversary, expressing appreciation for what it described as efforts to reposition the South-East towards growth and security.
