Turaki Group Backs Wike-Led PDP Committee, Makinde Stands Firm on Reconciliation

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde may find himself at odds with the latest moves within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the Taminu Turaki-led faction signals willingness to embrace the Wike-backed National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) for party unity.

Turaki, speaking to reporters, emphasized that it was time to “sheath the sword” and reconcile with the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led NCWC, aimed at fostering peace within the party. This stance appears to conflict with Makinde’s position over the past week.

During a visit to Bauchi on Sunday, Makinde assured Governor Bala Mohammed that he would remain in PDP but would not collaborate with the Wike-backed NCWC, equating such cooperation to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election—an idea he opposes. On Monday in Ibadan, Makinde reiterated his refusal to reconcile with the NCWC, promising that supporters seeking elective offices would receive guidance on alternative platforms, to be revealed on April 18.

Despite this, efforts to restore unity in the PDP are gaining momentum. Turaki announced that leaders on both sides are exploring pathways toward a lasting resolution, urging supporters to “de-escalate high-tempered communications and actions” to safeguard ongoing peace initiatives.

Turaki highlighted the importance of compromise, stating, “We have chosen the path of peace in the overall interest of party members… PDP will not die. Everything possible will be done to make this reconciliation work.” He assured aspirants that they would be fielded in line with Article 6(2) of the PDP Constitution (2017).

Meanwhile, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike reaffirmed the unity of the party, asserting, “There is only one PDP. Some individuals may not be happy, yes, but there is no faction,” while emphasizing that reconciliation will continue alongside preparations for the national convention in Abuja.

Other party leaders, including Isa Adamu of Kwara State PDP and former Deputy Speaker Chibudom Nwuche, echoed calls for unity, urging aggrieved members to set aside differences and embrace reconciliation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The developments signal a renewed push for cohesion within Africa’s largest opposition party, as factions seek to resolve internal disputes and consolidate ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
