The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a significant step toward its 2027 electoral strategy, as zonal congresses held across the six geopolitical regions concluded smoothly, reaffirming party unity and consolidating support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a strong political signal, the North-Central zone formally endorsed President Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, while other regions echoed similar commitments to cohesion and electoral readiness.
North-Central Leads with Early Endorsement
At the zonal congress in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, spearheaded the motion to adopt Tinubu as the region’s sole candidate. The motion, seconded by Governor Abdullahi Sule, received unanimous backing from party stakeholders.
Akume described the North-Central as Nigeria’s political “glue” and expressed confidence in its capacity to deliver substantial votes in 2027, while cautioning party members against complacency.
South-West Reaffirms Stronghold Status
In Lagos, the APC South-West congress re-elected Isaacs Kekemeke as zonal chairman by consensus. Addressing delegates, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the peaceful conduct of the exercise and emphasized the region’s critical role in securing Tinubu’s re-election.
Kekemeke pledged improved performance and overwhelming electoral support for the President, projecting victories in key states like Ekiti and Osun.
South-East Signals Growing Influence
In Enugu, Ijeoma Arodiogbu was re-elected alongside other executives through consensus. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu described the process as reflective of collective party will.
Governor Peter Mbah highlighted the development as evidence of the APC’s expanding footprint in the South-East, commending President Tinubu’s reform agenda.
South-South Targets Electoral Dominance
The South-South zone, meeting in Asaba, Delta State, also re-elected Victor Giadom and other officials via consensus.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged the region to position itself as the APC’s highest vote contributor in 2027, citing growing political alignment within the zone.
North-East Embraces Consensus Model
In Gombe State, the North-East chapter adopted a consensus approach to elect its zonal leaders. Governor Mai Mala Buni described the process as constitutional and essential for strengthening party cohesion.
A Party in Consolidation Mode
Across all regions, the APC’s reliance on consensus arrangements and the absence of major disputes point to a deliberate effort to maintain internal stability ahead of the next general election cycle.
With early endorsements, unified messaging, and renewed leadership structures, the party appears to be consolidating its base and positioning itself strongly for the 2027 presidential race.
