Alibaba Philanthropy and the Jack Ma Foundation have unveiled a $1.5 million grant package for African entrepreneurs under the 2026 edition of Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH), reinforcing their commitment to supporting innovation and inclusive economic growth across the continent.
Now in its eighth edition, the competition is themed “Defining Africa’s Future Today” and targets founders developing transformative solutions in climate-smart agriculture, digital finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
Speaking on the initiative, Managing Director for Africa, Zahra Boateng-Baitie, said the programme goes beyond financial support.
“Africa’s future is being shaped by entrepreneurs who are addressing the continent’s most pressing challenges and unlocking its economic potential. Beyond the $1.5 million in grant funding, ABH equips founders with the strategic support they need to scale sustainable businesses, create jobs, and fuel inclusive growth,” she said.
In addition to the funding pool, the 2026 edition will expand its recognition base to the top 100 finalists and deepen on-the-ground engagement across ten African markets. Particular focus will be placed on underrepresented countries including Namibia, Tunisia and Zambia.
Top 10 finalists will also benefit from a fully sponsored learning experience at Alibaba’s campus in Hangzhou, China — an opportunity designed to expose participants to global best practices and advanced business ecosystems.
Applications are open to African citizens or legal residents who lead registered businesses with at least three years of operational track record and demonstrate measurable social impact.
Since its inception, ABH has attracted more than 30,000 applications annually, establishing itself as one of Africa’s leading platforms for entrepreneurs building scalable, solution-driven enterprises poised to drive long-term economic transformation.
