The Lagos State Government has stepped up enforcement efforts against illegal waste operators, as officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) intensified operations across key parts of the state to curb indiscriminate refuse disposal.
The exercise, carried out by LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement team, led to the arrest and dislodgement of several illegal cart pushers found collecting and dumping waste at unauthorized locations.
In a statement issued by the state government, authorities disclosed that the offenders were apprehended during routine monitoring operations designed to sustain environmental cleanliness across Lagos. The government noted that the activities of illegal cart pushers continue to undermine structured waste management systems and ongoing clean-up efforts.
Confiscated carts were recovered from multiple areas, including Anthony Oke (Newcastle axis), Ifako Gbagada, Alagomeji–Yaba, and surrounding communities.
Describing the operation as part of a sustained strategy to restore environmental order, the government reiterated its commitment to eliminating unregulated waste disposal practices.
“Our operatives remain actively deployed to eradicate indiscriminate waste disposal across the state. Illegal cart pushers who collect and dump refuse at undesignated locations are not only violating environmental laws but also sabotaging the progress made in maintaining a clean city,” an official stated.
Authorities expressed concern that previously cleaned streets and public spaces were being defaced again through unlawful dumping, calling the development both avoidable and unacceptable.
The government also issued a stern advisory to residents, urging them to desist from patronising unauthorized waste collectors and to adhere strictly to approved waste management procedures.
“Cleanliness is a shared responsibility. Sustainable sanitation requires compliance, not sabotage,” the statement emphasized.
Reaffirming its resolve, the Lagos State Government assured residents that surveillance and enforcement operations would continue statewide to ensure adherence to environmental regulations and deter actions that threaten public health and sanitation.
Residents were encouraged to support the government’s efforts by embracing responsible waste disposal practices, as collaboration between authorities and the public remains critical to achieving lasting environmental cleanliness across Lagos.
