INEC Releases Timetable for 2027 General Elections, Sets February 20 for Presidential Poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally announced the timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, fixing February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly polls.

The Governorship and State Assembly elections will follow two weeks later, on March 6, 2027.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the dates during a news conference held on Friday in Abuja, stating that the commission has concluded arrangements for the conduct of the elections in line with its constitutional mandate.

The announcement comes amid ongoing deliberations at the National Assembly over amendments to the Electoral Act. Earlier, on February 4, the commission revealed that it had already finalized its election timetable and schedule of activities despite delays in the passage of the amended law.

INEC noted that it had submitted its recommendations to lawmakers but acknowledged that certain aspects of its schedule could be affected depending on when the amended Electoral Act is eventually passed.

The commission emphasized that early planning remains critical to ensuring a smooth electoral process. Under the leadership of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, INEC had previously introduced long-term election date projections spanning several decades — a move aimed at reducing voter uncertainty, improving logistics, and enhancing coordination among stakeholders.

With the 2027 dates now officially released, political parties, candidates, and electoral stakeholders are expected to begin strategic preparations ahead of the nationwide polls.
