Ibadan, Oyo State – The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has accused the Oyo State Government of damaging railway assets worth several millions of naira in Ibadan, the state capital.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Corporation alleged that the destruction occurred on Monday, February 2, 2026, along the Mile One–Ten axis within the Ibadan South-West Local Government Area.
According to the NRC, the Chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Adeyemi Amanda, personally led the operation that resulted in the removal and destruction of critical railway infrastructure located on the Corporation’s legally protected right-of-way.
The Corporation further alleged that the group involved in the incident included hoodlums, individuals dressed in Nigerian Army uniforms, and operatives of the Oyo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun. It claimed the council chairman stated he was acting on the instruction of the state governor.
Railway assets reportedly affected include rails, sleepers, signal poles, billboards, and perimeter fences belonging to NRC tenants operating along the corridor.
Describing the incident as “worrisome,” the NRC emphasized that the affected area is a clearly demarcated and legally protected railway right-of-way under federal jurisdiction.
The statement noted that efforts by the NRC Police Command to stop the destruction were unsuccessful, as officers allegedly faced resistance and were forced to withdraw from the scene.
The Corporation’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, who signed the statement, described the incident as a grave violation of federal railway assets and confirmed that the NRC is documenting the matter comprehensively.
He added that the Corporation would take appropriate security, administrative, and legal actions to safeguard its assets and prevent future unauthorized encroachment on railway right-of-way nationwide.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, reaffirmed the Corporation’s commitment to maintaining law and order despite what he described as deliberate provocation.
