Darlington Orji, an aide to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has dismissed the ongoing impeachment move against the governor, insisting that it will not succeed.
Speaking on ARISE Television’s Morning Show, Orji said the allegations of gross misconduct and financial misappropriation levelled against Fubara lack substance and cannot stand legal scrutiny.
According to him, only the Rivers State House of Assembly has the constitutional authority to establish misconduct or misappropriation, adding that the current process is already flawed.
“I can tell you for free that this process will not scale through because there is no truth in it,” Orji said. “As you rightly noted, it is only the Assembly that can interpret when there is misappropriation or gross misconduct.”
Orji further argued that Nigerian courts have repeatedly overturned impeachment processes that failed to comply with due process, suggesting that the same fate awaits the current move against the Rivers governor.
“You will also agree with me that so many courts in the land have ignored impeachment processes because they did not follow the procedure,” he said.
The governor’s aide also claimed that there is no consensus within the House of Assembly to remove Fubara, stating that several lawmakers are uncomfortable with the process.
“I’m not a member of the House, but I am on ground. We reached out to many of them. Many are my friends, people we have worked with before. They are not happy with what they are doing,” Orji added.
He expressed confidence that the impeachment process would soon collapse, saying it would be “completely put to rest” within a short time.
