Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent terrorist attack on a community in Niger State that reportedly left dozens of people dead and several others abducted, describing the incident as a national shame.
In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, Obi lamented the persistence of violent attacks across the country, saying Nigeria must urgently put an end to what he described as a dangerous cycle of insecurity.
Reacting to the attack at Kasuwan-Daji Market in the Domo community of Borgu Local Government Area, Obi said it was deeply disturbing that such large-scale violence continues unabated, even as the country ushers in a new year.
He also referenced other recent attacks across the country, including incidents in Plateau, Kano and Katsina states, noting that the frequency and spread of such violence point to a troubling pattern that has become normalized.
According to Obi, Nigeria’s continued inability to guarantee the safety of its citizens represents a failure of a fundamental responsibility of government. He stressed that protecting lives must remain the highest priority and called for an “all-hands-on-deck” response, driven by coordinated, capable and decisive action to end insecurity.
“The repeated failure to provide basic security for citizens is a national shame, and the toll it takes on families and communities is immeasurable,” he said, adding that the nation cannot afford to continue accepting such killings as routine.
Obi extended his condolences to families affected by the recent attacks in Niger, Plateau, Kano, Katsina and other parts of the country, assuring them that the nation mourns with them.
“This cycle of violence must be stopped,” he concluded.
