Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has filed a criminal complaint before the Chief Magistrate Court in Kaduna State against two Facebook users over alleged death threats and defamatory publications linked to his name.
The suit, marked KMD/685/25, was filed on December 24, 2025, following a series of Facebook posts which Sheikh Gumi said falsely portrayed him as issuing violent threats and inciting attacks, actions he insists he never took.
According to court documents, the defendants, George Udom and Bello Isiaka, allegedly published a Facebook post on December 23, 2025, attributing to Sheikh Gumi a statement threatening Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, over ongoing military operations against bandits.
The controversial post reportedly claimed that the minister’s family residence in Zangon Kataf, Southern Kaduna, would be attacked if the military did not halt its offensive operations.
Through his legal counsel, Suleiman Danlami Lere, Esq., Sheikh Gumi firmly denied making any such statement, describing the publication as false, malicious, and dangerous, capable of portraying him as a sponsor of terrorism and a threat to national security.
The cleric told the court that the defendants allegedly used his name and photograph to lend credibility to the purported threat, an action he said exposed him to potential retaliation from security agencies and members of the public.
The application for criminal summons cited relevant provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017, under which the defendants could face prosecution if the allegations are proven.
Sheikh Gumi stressed that he is widely known for advocating peaceful dialogue and conflict resolution, adding that the publications were “wicked” and deliberately designed to incite hatred, fear, and violence against him.
The court is expected to determine whether criminal summons should be issued against the defendants as the case proceeds.
