Wike Targets 70% Completion of FCT Public School Renovations by Early 2026

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, is projected to complete between 60 and 70 per cent of ongoing public secondary school renovation projects across the territory by the first quarter of 2026.

This was disclosed on Monday in Abuja by the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, Danlami Hayyo, while speaking with journalists shortly after his reinstatement following a three-week suspension.

Hayyo expressed gratitude to the minister for reinstating him and reaffirmed his loyalty and commitment to advancing the administration’s education agenda.

According to him, more than 100 public secondary schools have already been fully renovated under the ongoing rehabilitation and upgrade programme, with several others currently at various stages of completion.

“We expect that by the first quarter of 2026, about 60 to 70 per cent of the school renovation projects will be completed and ready for inauguration by the minister,” Hayyo said.

He described the initiative as unprecedented, noting that no previous administration in the FCT had achieved such a large-scale transformation of public school infrastructure.

“This is a laudable achievement. There has never been a regime in the FCT where schools have witnessed this level of massive transformation. I do not think there is any other state that can compete with the FCT in terms of infrastructural and physical facilities in schools,” he added.

Clarifying the circumstances surrounding his suspension, Hayyo explained that it stemmed from an unauthorised circular issued by a director, which instructed schools to close early over alleged security threats.

He stressed that directors do not have the authority to issue such directives without clearance from the mandate secretary or the FCT minister.

Hayyo thanked Wike for his understanding and decision to reinstate him, while also emphasizing the need for capacity building among senior officials within the education secretariat.

“As I resume duty, one of my first priorities is refresher training. Newly appointed and existing directors must undergo structured training to fully understand their mandates, responsibilities, and the appropriate channels for consultation,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Hayyo was suspended on November 25 following the circulation of the early school closure directive and was reinstated on December 17 by the FCT Minister.
