Mass Defection Rocks Niger PDP as Aggrieved Members Quit Over Leadership Crisis

0

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State has been hit by a wave of resignations amid rising political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development followed a tense meeting held over the weekend in Lapai Local Government Area, where aggrieved party members openly challenged the state leadership over unresolved grievances, internal democracy, and alleged marginalisation of the grassroots.

According to findings, the meeting ended with several members announcing their decision to quit the party, citing loss of confidence in the leadership structure at both state and national levels.

One of the defectors, Abdullahi Jankara, while addressing party members, spoke extensively on controversies surrounding the PDP congress and recent council elections. He acknowledged the deep frustration within the party and accused the leadership of failing to honour promises made to loyal members.

Jankara said repeated appeals for reform were ignored, leaving many members disillusioned and with no option but to exit the party.

The aggrieved members also blamed the crisis on lingering leadership tussles at the national level, arguing that unresolved internal conflicts had fostered impunity and weakened accountability across the party’s structure.

They further accused the party leadership of sidelining ward and local government structures during the recent council elections, alleging that despite massive grassroots mobilisation, critical decisions were imposed from above.

According to them, such actions rendered local party structures ineffective and disconnected the party from its base.

“We are tired of being used and discarded. The party has become a family business where only a few people benefit. This is not the leadership we deserve, and it’s time for change,” the members declared.

The mass resignation is seen as another major setback for the PDP in Niger State as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 polls.
