The founder of One Love Family, Satguru Maharaj Ji, has declared that he can help secure the release of the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu—on the condition that the pro-Biafra radio broadcast and the sit-at-home directives are discontinued.
Speaking during an interview on his temple’s in-house radio on Wednesday, Maharaj Ji insisted that Kanu’s continued detention is tied to the severity of the terrorism charges for which he was convicted.
According to him, “By the accusations against him, the punishment is death, going by the constitution and the level of crimes attached to the charges. It is out of grace that Kanu did not get a death sentence.”
Maharaj Ji stressed that only a political resolution can pave the way for Kanu’s freedom, urging those pushing for his release to take concrete actions.
“They must not come with empty hands,” he said. “They should stop the Biafra radio wherever it is operating. The sit-at-home order should also end, and the judgment should be accepted. Igbo elders should then meet the President behind the scenes to analyse and explain the situation.”
He further noted that President Bola Tinubu has elevated the political relevance of the South-East, a development he claimed has unsettled some influential northern interests.
“When these steps are taken, I know how to work it out. Kanu will come out. I will help facilitate his release,” he assured.
His comments come as more prominent figures intensify efforts for Kanu’s freedom. Abia State governor, Alex Otti, activist Omoyele Sowore, and other South-East leaders have continued to push for a political solution.
On Tuesday, Governor Otti met with President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja shortly after visiting Kanu at the Sokoto prison facility, where the IPOB leader is serving his sentence. The visit is believed to be part of ongoing negotiations to secure Kanu’s release.
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence after Justice James Omotosho convicted him on seven counts of terrorism-related offences. While he avoided the death penalty, he received multiple sentences, including a life term, a 20-year term without the option of a fine, and a five-year term on another count.
Despite the legal setbacks, Maharaj Ji urged residents of the South-East to remain hopeful, insisting that “all hope is not lost.”
