The Igbo Community Association (ICA) in Abuja has called on President Bola Tinubu to heed the mounting appeals from Nigerians and the international community by ordering the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The group said Kanu’s continued incarceration is fueling resentment and heightening tension across the South East, the country, and the diaspora.
In a statement signed by its President General, Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, the association described the imprisonment as an injustice meted out to an already marginalised people, warning that the fallout could have far-reaching consequences.
“The judgment of November 20, 2025, smacks of judicial recklessness,” the statement said. “It mirrors the kind of events that once pushed Nigeria toward the brink, especially in the period leading to the 1966 pogrom.”
The ICA expressed deep concern over the possible ripple effects of the ruling on the South East and other regions, urging the Federal Government to pursue a political resolution.
“With a saddened heart, the Igbo Community Association, FCT, calls on the Tinubu administration to listen to the voice of the people and release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” the statement continued. “The President should also consider the appeals of the forty-four National Assembly members who have urged him to adopt a political solution to the Nnamdi Kanu matter.”
The association advised President Tinubu to take advantage of what it described as a critical moment to rebuild trust and promote national unity.
“It would be wise to grant Nnamdi Kanu freedom. Igbos are Nigerians and deserve to be treated as such. Nnamdi Kanu is a Nigerian, and he deserves to be treated as one,” the group said.
