The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its 2026 governorship primary following escalating leadership disputes at the party’s national level.
The primary election had been scheduled for Tuesday, December 2, 2025, but DAILY POST gathered that unresolved internal conflicts within the PDP National Secretariat made the exercise impossible.
In a statement issued in Osogbo, the state chairman, Sunday Bisi, explained that Governor Ademola Adeleke had completed all requirements outlined in the party’s nomination timetable. According to him, Adeleke purchased and submitted his expression of interest and nomination forms between October 13 and 25, 2025, and appeared before the Screening Committee on October 30, where he was cleared and issued a Certificate of Clearance.
However, Bisi disclosed that fresh crises erupted shortly after the screening process, leading to the suspension of key national officers responsible for supervising congresses and primaries.
He said the leadership tussle—now the subject of multiple court cases across Nigeria—halted the ward and local government congresses earlier fixed for November 24 and 29, during which delegates for the governorship primary were to be elected.
“In light of these developments, it has become inevitable that the PDP governorship primary can no longer hold as scheduled,” he stated.
Bisi further confirmed that Governor Adeleke remains the only aspirant who purchased and submitted nomination forms and successfully passed the screening process. Nonetheless, he warned that the prolonged national crisis has raised fears that Adeleke may reconsider seeking the party’s ticket unless a resolution acceptable to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is reached within the permitted timeframe.
The PDP emphasised that only the National Secretariat is constitutionally empowered to conduct primaries but said it was important to keep party members and the public informed of ongoing developments.
Bisi assured that efforts are underway to secure a lawful, timely resolution to the crisis, reiterating the party’s commitment to transparency and strict adherence to electoral guidelines.
