The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed that the country’s 12 electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) collected a total of ₦192.26 billion in September 2025 out of ₦241.54 billion billed within the month — leaving ₦49.28 billion unrecovered.

This was disclosed in NERC’s Commercial Performance Factsheet for September 2025, released on the Commission’s official X handle.

According to the report, the DisCos received ₦279.45 billion worth of energy in September, billing customers ₦241.54 billion, which translated into a billing efficiency of 86.43%, a 2.58% improvement from August.

On revenue collection, the Commission noted that the companies recorded 81.25% collection efficiency, with ₦196.26 billion recovered out of the total billings — a slight 2.69% increase from the previous month.

NERC further explained that the allowed average tariff for the period stood at ₦116.34/kWh, while the actual average collection was ₦97.09/kWh. This resulted in an 83.45% recovery efficiency, marking a 3.67% rise from August.

The factsheet highlighted Eko, Abuja, and Ikeja DisCos as the strongest performers across billing, collection, and recovery metrics.

Aba DisCo also posted notable gains, achieving a 102.85% billing efficiency, driven by improved energy optimisation and legacy debt recovery. Benin, Port Harcourt, and Kano showed moderate performance, while Jos, Kaduna, and Yola continued to lag, indicating significant room for improvement.

NERC stated that the figures give a clearer understanding of how effectively the DisCos are managing billing, collections, and revenue recovery — critical indicators for strengthening liquidity and improving service delivery across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
