Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the deadly attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, calling it a painful reminder of Nigeria’s deepening insecurity.
Atiku, in a statement shared on his X handle on Monday, said he was heartbroken by the incident, which resulted in the killing of the school’s Vice-Principal and the abduction of several female students.
“I am devastated by the news of the tragic attack… This is yet another reminder of the worsening insecurity in our nation,” he wrote.
The former Vice President also decried the killing of APC chieftain Umar Moriki and the mass abductions in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where entire families—women and children included—were seized by gunmen.
“These acts of barbarity have no place in a civilised society,” Atiku said.
He further lamented the persistent violence in Plateau, Benue, and other states, adding that several communities were being torn apart by incessant attacks. He noted that residents of Shanono LGA in Kano State were fleeing their homes out of fear, a development he described as evidence of a national security crisis that had reached an intolerable level.
Atiku urged the Federal Government to overhaul the country’s security architecture, deploy sufficient personnel to vulnerable areas, and strengthen intelligence-driven operations.
“Our citizens deserve protection, dignity, and peace—nothing less,” he stated.
Earlier, PUNCH Online reported that gunmen stormed the Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School in the early hours of Monday. They killed a staff member, injured a school guard, and abducted an undisclosed number of students.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident on its official WhatsApp channel, explaining that tactical units engaged the attackers but the gunmen had already whisked the students away.
Police operatives, working with the military and other security agencies, have since launched a search-and-rescue operation, combing forests and known bandit routes in an effort to recover the students.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, appealed to residents to remain calm and vigilant, assuring the public of the command’s commitment to restoring peace and protecting lives and property.
