Senate President Godswill Akpabio has voiced deep concern over the relentless insecurity plaguing Plateau State, stating that he is personally pained each time a life is lost to violence.
Speaking on Saturday at the Jos Polo Field during a high-profile All Progressives Congress (APC) rally to welcome new defectors, Akpabio described the situation in Plateau as heartbreaking and unsustainable.
“Too many lives have been lost. Too many homes destroyed. Plateau deserves peace, and anyone who wants to govern this state must be committed to peace,” he said. “I cry whenever anybody is killed in Plateau. The state is looking for peace, and President Tinubu will deliver peace to Plateau State.”
The event drew top APC figures from the North-Central region, including APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, former Plateau Governor Senator Simon Lalong, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, and Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.
Akpabio commended the wave of political heavyweights crossing over to the APC, describing it as a sign of the party’s growing strength ahead of the 2027 elections. He also praised Prof. Yilwatda’s leadership, calling him “a man of valour, integrity, and dignity,” while crediting President Bola Tinubu for the party’s increasing influence in Plateau.
Prominent defectors unveiled at the rally include former Plateau North Senator Istifanus Gyang; former PDP campaign director-general Latep Dabang; Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate Patrick Dakum; and former NNPP governorship candidate Alfred Dabwam.
Plateau State remains one of the most volatile spots in the North-Central region, with recurring attacks leading to deaths, destruction of property, and displacement of communities. Akpabio assured residents that restoring peace to the state remains a top priority for the federal government.
