The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced that the number of active electricity customers in the country rose to 11.96 million in August 2025, up from 11.89 million in July.
This was revealed in the commission’s Metering Factsheet for July and August 2025, published on its official X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram handles on Monday.
According to NERC, the updated figures cover all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) nationwide. Out of the total customers, 6.58 million were metered, representing a metering rate of 55.01%, a slight rise from 54.71% in July.
“A total of 70,888 customers were newly metered in August, compared to 76,783 in July, reflecting ongoing metering efforts across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI),” the report stated.
The commission attributed the steady growth in metering to reforms and increased investments by DisCos aimed at improving billing transparency and consumer confidence.
Among the top performers, Ikeja Electric recorded a metering coverage of 84.83%, followed closely by Eko Electricity Distribution Company with 84.25%, while Abuja Electricity Distribution Company achieved 73.92%.
Earlier in April, NERC had sanctioned eight DisCos — Abuja, Ikeja, Eko, Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola — for breaching approved monthly energy caps on estimated billing for unmetered customers. The firms were fined a combined ₦628 million and ordered to credit affected customers.
Meanwhile, NERC’s data for the second quarter of 2025 showed a total of 225,631 meters installed nationwide, marking a 20.55% increase compared to 187,161 units in the first quarter.
Out of the new installations, 147,823 meters (65.52%) were deployed under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) initiative, 65,315 through the Meter Acquisition Fund, 12,259 via vendor financing, and 234 under DisCo-financed schemes.
