INEC Warns Osun Parties Against Early Campaigns, Urges Peaceful Primaries Ahead of 2026 Poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged political parties in Osun State to conduct peaceful, transparent, and law-abiding primaries ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, made the appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Tuesday at the Commission’s state headquarters in Osogbo.

Dr. Agboke explained that the interactive session was part of INEC’s continuous engagement with stakeholders to ensure a full understanding and compliance with the 2026 election timetable.

“We must always continue to engage you on each item on the timetable of the 2026 governorship election so as to be on the same page with us,” he said.

According to him, political parties are expected to conduct their primaries between November 24 and December 15, 2025, in line with Section 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022.

He noted that while 19 political parties are registered in Nigeria, only 18 are currently active in Osun State.

Dr. Agboke called on political leaders to uphold internal democracy and avoid actions that could trigger pre-election crises.

“Free and fair polls begin with the way parties conduct themselves during primaries. Peaceful primaries promote democratic values and foster unity within parties,” he added.

He also warned parties against premature campaigns, stressing that electioneering activities have not officially commenced.

“As we speak, campaign activities have not started. No political party is expected to do so at this time in whatever guise or manner,” he said, citing Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act, which stipulates that campaigns must begin 150 days before polling day and end 24 hours before the election.

The REC advised parties to consult INEC’s website for approved guidelines on rallies, processions, and campaigns.

He expressed concern that some party members could not identify their party logos and called for intensified voter education and a collective fight against vote buying.

“Election is a multi-stakeholder task. INEC alone cannot deliver a successful poll. Political parties must cooperate with us and educate their members. The menace of vote buying has reduced the potency of our democratic value,” he cautioned.

Dr. Agboke disclosed that as of October 24, 2025, a total of 151,593 registrants had completed their Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Osun State.

He commended residents for their participation and urged eligible voters who are yet to register to do so.

“I appreciate the people of Osun State for their support. We appeal to those yet to register to do so in order to vote in the coming elections,” he said.

The INEC boss also lauded his staff for their professionalism and advised them to remain committed despite misinformation.

On his part, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, assured that the police would ensure the safety of voters and electoral officials during the polls.

He urged citizens to report any acts of violence to the control room via 08039537995 or 08123823987.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Osun, Pastor Victor Akande, appealed to political actors to maintain peace and respect the rule of law.

He, however, alleged that some political parties had already commenced campaigns in violation of electoral guidelines, urging INEC to take necessary action to ensure a level playing field.

“Without peace and adherence to the rule of law, democracy cannot thrive,” Akande stressed.
