Human rights activist and #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, was re-arrested on Friday by police officers shortly after securing bail from the Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja.
Sowore, along with Prince Emmanuel Kanu — brother to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu — as well as Aloy Ejimakor, a former member of Kanu’s legal team, and ten others, had earlier been granted bail by the court.
The court approved bail in the sum of ₦500,000 each, with conditions requiring two sureties residing within the Federal Capital Territory, valid identification, and three years of tax clearance.
However, despite meeting all the stipulated bail requirements, Sowore was reportedly apprehended again by security operatives immediately after the court session and taken back into custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Sources close to the activist described the move as a “targeted crackdown” linked to his recent public remarks alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was a criminal.
Sowore is expected to be arraigned again on Monday, October 27, on fresh charges reportedly connected to those comments.
The re-arrest has drawn criticism from civil rights observers, who argue that it underscores continuing tensions between state authorities and outspoken activists in Nigeria’s democratic space.
