Reports circulating online that some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders met to “push” the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to contest the 2027 presidential election have been dismissed as false and mischievous.
In a statement on Friday, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, described the report as “another lie from idle minds who have nothing to contribute to the nation’s development.”
According to Olayinka, “As far as Wike is concerned, it is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu till 2031.”
He accused detractors of engaging in “kindergarten tactics” aimed at tarnishing Wike’s image, insisting that the Minister “does not function in hiding—he does what he says and says what he does.”
“The Minister has made it abundantly clear where he stands regarding the 2027 presidential election—he is fully with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Olayinka stated.
Clarifying the event being misrepresented, Olayinka explained that the only meeting held on August 20, 2025, was that of PDP stakeholders from Southern Nigeria. The purpose, he said, was to discuss an upcoming Lagos meeting convened by some party members seeking to rubber-stamp a decision on zoning positions allocated to the South.
He noted that the outcome of that meeting was made public in a joint statement signed by several PDP leaders, including state chairmen and national officers such as Austin Nwachukwu (Imo), Abraham Amah (Abia), Venatuis Ikem (Cross River), Rt. Hon. Aniekan Akpan (Akwa Ibom), and Aaron Chukwuemeka (Rivers), among others.
“The names of those who attended the meeting are publicly available in the statement published by major newspapers and aired on national TV. It’s unfortunate that mischief-makers have now twisted that to suit their propaganda,” Olayinka said.
He reaffirmed that Wike remains committed to President Tinubu’s administration and is focused on delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT.
“To ensure the success of the President’s re-election, Wike will continue to deliver on the President’s vision for a world-class federal capital city,” he added.
