Medical Panel Clears Nnamdi Kanu: Court Rules He’s Fit to Face Trial

A medical team empanelled by the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has declared that the health condition of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is not life-threatening.

The team’s report, ordered by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, was meant to determine Kanu’s true medical status following conflicting assessments from both the prosecution and defence experts.

Submitting the report on October 13, the prosecution team led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) presented findings confirming that Kanu’s health does not prevent him from standing trial.

Reading parts of the report in open court on Thursday, Justice Omotosho ruled that he was satisfied with the medical conclusion and therefore declared Kanu fit to proceed with his terrorism trial.

The court further granted Kanu six consecutive days—beginning October 23—to open and close his defence.

In a related development, Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), successfully applied for a private consultation between the defendant and his legal team, citing fears that discussions within the Department of State Services (DSS) facility might be monitored.

Justice Omotosho approved the request, directing that the private meeting be held in the courtroom from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on October 22. The trial will then resume on October 23.
