The Kwara State Government has dismissed as false reports suggesting that nine local government areas are currently under siege by armed bandits.
In a statement issued in Ilorin on Monday, the state Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, described the claim as “reckless and unfounded,” emphasizing that no part of the state is under siege.
“The unfortunate challenges we have had in a few areas do not justify the wicked escalation and fake news being circulated by opposition elements within and outside the state,” she stated.
Olukoju alleged that those promoting the story online are “the digital equivalent of bandits,” accusing them of spreading fear and misinformation through social media posts about supposed gunmen movements in Asa Local Government Area.
She expressed disappointment that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, shared such claims on his social media platforms, urging him to take down the post.
“This is not expected from him as a statesman. We request Mr. Peter Obi to bring down the post as it is totally false and inappropriate,” the Commissioner said.
Olukoju further appealed to the public to desist from sharing unverified information capable of causing panic and distress, adding that such actions hinder the efforts of security agencies working to maintain peace across the state.
