Lawmaker representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, has strongly condemned the mob killing of a teacher identified as Ummulkhairi, describing the incident as a tragic act of barbarity and a stain on the nation’s conscience.
DAILY POST reports that Ummulkhairi was lynched on Sunday in Mararaban Jos, a community along the Kaduna-Zaria highway, after being falsely accused of attempting to kidnap children.
Reacting to the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday, Bello El-Rufai expressed outrage over the gruesome killing, lamenting that an innocent woman whose only intention was to seek directions to attend a lecture became the victim of mob violence.
He stated that no allegation or suspicion, particularly one unsupported by evidence, could ever justify taking the law into one’s own hands.
“The sanctity of human life is fundamental to both our faith and our laws, yet she was denied due process and killed in the most inhumane manner,” the lawmaker said.
El-Rufai also raised concerns over reports that security personnel were present at the scene but failed to effectively intervene and prevent the attack.
“Every Nigerian deserves the full protection of the law, and jungle justice must never be normalised under any circumstances,” he added.
The lawmaker further decried the increasing incidents of mob violence across the country, warning that the trend, often fueled by rumours, misinformation and hasty judgments, poses a serious threat to societal peace and justice.
According to him, no society can thrive when citizens abandon the rule of law and resort to self-help.
He called on security agencies to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident and ensure that all those involved, including perpetrators, instigators and any negligent officials, are held accountable.
El-Rufai also urged authorities to implement stronger preventive measures to curb future occurrences of mob violence.
Extending his condolences to the deceased’s family, the lawmaker prayed for Allah’s mercy upon Ummulkhairi and comfort for her loved ones.
“My thoughts and prayers are with her family. May Allah forgive her shortcomings, grant her Al-Jannah Firdaus, and comfort her loved ones. May justice prevail,” he said.
