The political landscape in Kano State took a new turn on Tuesday as the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Gobirawa Ward, Dala Local Government Area, Alhaji Amadu Danfulani, officially dumped the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gobirawa, widely recognized as the largest ward in Nigeria with the highest number of polling units, witnessed a major shift as Danfulani defected alongside thousands of his followers.
Speaking at the defection ceremony held at the Kano State APC Headquarters, Hotoro-Maiduguri Road, Danfulani said he was disillusioned with the Kwankwasiyya Movement and its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He cited “anti-people’s policies and programmes” of the NNPP-led government in Kano State as the reason for his decision.
“I am happy to join the APC. Together with the party executives and the MD of Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, we will work assiduously to deliver President Bola Tinubu and all APC candidates in the 2027 elections,” Danfulani declared.
The defection was overseen by APC State Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, represented by Zonal Chairman (Kano Central), Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Ungoggo. Also in attendance were Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, Kano State Youth Leader and Northwest Zonal Youth Leader Alhaji Labaran Kura, Dala Local Government APC Chairman Alhaji Munir Haruna, and Gobirawa Ward APC Chairman.
While welcoming the new entrants, Abbas, through Ungoggo, said the APC doors remain open to all opposition members, provided they adhere to the party’s rules and constitution. He added that even Kwankwaso himself would be welcomed back if he follows due process.
Political observers believe the mass defection from Gobirawa Ward — the largest in the country — could give APC a significant edge in Kano as the 2027 general election approaches.
