Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has revealed how some of her husband’s political allies betrayed him in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking through her newly released 52-page book, The Journey of Grace: Giving Thanks in All Things, which was unveiled to mark her 65th birthday, Mrs. Tinubu said President Bola Tinubu had nursed the ambition of leading Nigeria for more than 14 years but faced unexpected opposition from close quarters.
According to her, many individuals she expected to support the idea of his presidency were unwilling to commit, while some deliberately distanced themselves from the project.
“Some consultations were favourable, while others were neither here nor there. Some said no indirectly, while others would rather want to see the outcome before taking a position,” she wrote.
Reflecting on the experience, the First Lady stressed that she had chosen to let go of past disappointments.
“I realised that whatever good you do in life, it is only God who rewards you and not man. Letting go is what I did; doing good is what matters most,” she noted, drawing inspiration from biblical passages including Acts 10:38, Jeremiah 17:5-8, and Hebrews 12:2.
Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that she holds no grudge against anyone, describing human betrayal as a reminder of the “frailty of man” and urging people never to put their trust in man but in God.
