The National Chairman of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Ajuji Ahmed, has dismissed speculation that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is set to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ahmed made the clarification on Tuesday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, emphasizing that the NNPP remains open to forming strategic coalitions.
“I don’t think what he said indicated in any way that he is defecting or about to defect. NNPP has a long-standing position that we have options,” Ahmed explained.
He outlined three paths the party could take: pursuing alliances with like-minded parties, considering overtures from APC under concrete guarantees for the welfare of party members, or contesting elections independently.
“Kwankwaso only mentioned one of the three options in Kano, noting that if APC invites his attention, he would consider it, provided there are concrete guarantees for the interests of his party members, not just himself,” Ahmed added.
The clarification comes amid widespread speculation in political circles about possible post-election realignments.
